Feeling at home at Nantucket's historic inns
The lodging choices in Nantucket vary immensely from luxury hotels to quaint, charming Bed and Breakfasts and everything in between. During off-season, the room rates for accommodations drop drastically allowing you the flexibility to indulge in the highest quality hotel experience on the island however I chose to stay in a collection of designer inns in Downtown Nantucket. The Roberts Collection proved to be my oasis, centrally located to allow me easy and walkable access to the many main attractions, restaurants, bars and shops of Nantucket. I loved staying here and wished I could have stayed longer.
The Roberts Collection, Downtown Nantucket
The Roberts Collection in Downtown Nantucket is in fact a collection of four buildings resembling large houses. Located on India and Centre Streets, the location is ideal for exploring downtown. They are beautiful and historic, well-maintained and feel the way it should when you decide to experience Nantucket in all of its ethereal New England island charm and beauty.
I loved these houses with their paned windows and dark navy blue shutters. The courtyard that all four buildings share is lovely, planted with greenery and hydrangea. It is the perfect place to relax, read, sip a beverage, enjoy the weather or enjoy the free WiFi.
MEETING HOUSE is the oldest of the four inns and was built in the 1800's as an old Quaker meeting house, serving as the religious gathering center in town. There is a collection of small shops and restaurants on the street level of Centre Street and guest rooms to reserve above. The rooms here would be considered the most economical to reserve and a few of them have shared bathrooms, traditionally provided by Bed and Breakfasts.
ROBERTS HOUSE is the Matriarch of the collection built in 1846. Recently this year, it underwent a complete new facelift providing modern amenities and whimsical and ocean-inspired decor, befitting for Nantucket. The Roberts House was one of the first single family homes converted to an inn to accommodate guests. It has served this purpose for over 100 years. Reception for checking-in and the cafe serving daily breakfast are located in The Roberts House using the entrance on India Street.
MANOR HOUSE is another delightfully decorated building with a covered porch. It only has 15 guest rooms but they feature original wood flooring and moldings from the second half of the 20th Century.
Finally the GATE HOUSE where I decided to stay was built from the ground up in 2013 and still remains classic Nantucket by blending antique architecture with modern amenities. The front door opens to a cozy living room and to the right, stairs lead to guest rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
This house has 17 rooms and two suites. My guest room was room number 22 on the 2nd floor, a corner Deluxe king room with five paned windows overlooking the entrance of Gate House, a partial view of the courtyard and some guest rooms of the Manor House. The king-sized bed with designer linens was comfy and heavenly to sleep upon. The room was decorated in muted, neutral colors and a jute rug on dark wood floors. It reminded me a lot of the style of the famous Interior Designer Jeff Lewis. There are two night tables on each side of the bed and a dresser to stow your belongings. The closet came equipped with several hangers, an iron and ironing board and a small refrigerator. The room was also air-conditioned. The bathroom was spacious and up-to-date with modern fixtures, dainty touches and supplied one of my favorite skincare lines, Fresh.
What makes The Roberts Collection an ideal choice in Nantucket is that it offers options of high quality boutique hotel experience or value-oriented luxury and anything in between. If you are traveling on a budget, you can reserve a room in the Meeting House. If you prefer the creature comforts of a designer boutique hotel, you can opt for the Gate House.
They have a diverse offering of rooms and suites to satisfy your expectations. Moreover, The Roberts Collection is a convenient choice for being downtown and to partake in all activities, sightseeing, dining and shopping of Nantucket. I absolutely loved it here.
